SIMRAD – PUMP – THE HEART OF THE AUTOPILOT
Hydraulic systems such as the PUMP pump from Simrad are now used on all types of boats. In many respects, hydraulic piloting is preferable to a mechanical system. Hydraulic systems normally consist of two components: A hydraulic pump and one or two cylinders adapted to the pump’s power.

REVERSIBLE HYDRAULIC PUMPWhatever the pump model used (piston or centrifugal), it is installed in a closed hydraulic circuit in which pressurized oil drives the cylinder. The linear motion of the cylinder piston is transformed into circular motion by the tiller, which moves the rudder back and forth. Safety (non-return) valves are usually installed in the system to prevent any action on the rudder from affecting the hydraulic system. If an autopilot is installed in the steering system, then it must generate electrical commands that cause the rudder to move. |
